Being an avid sports fan and a competitive athlete, this is one opportunity that I can’t hold back. Being brought up from a family that was newly immigrated, my parents worked hard to allow me to experience every sport. This lead me to play not only the tradition Canadian sport of hockey, but also the likes of soccer, tennis, badminton, snowboard, lacrosse, curling and many others. Through many of these sports, team work was one of the things I learned and learning to take initiative and leadership when there were hardships in the team was something that was instilled. Being allowed to further my sports experience, I not only went to get a sports scholarship in post-secondary school, but I also became a certified tennis instructor through Tennis Canada and am able to teach my students what many of my coaches were able to teach me: have fun, learn, and be able to work as a team. I believe this is what Canada also is; a leader in sports through it’s’ development for kids and also a team; where athletes support other athletes even when they are not in the same field of sport. The outpour of support when Joannie Rochette went to skate during the Vancouver 2010 Olympics was a memory I will never forget. It showed how the nation would not let an athlete stand alone in a time where she needed the support and care.
